To Hell With Tiger And Rocco. Roger and Rafael!!!!
There are no superlatives I can state that would surpass the reality of what happened on Wimbledon Center Court Sunday. Two great players playing at peak efficiency. A young lion against the top dog. The best Wimbledon men’s final since the ’70’s and ’80’s. Tennis at a mind numbingly high level.
And if that wasn’t enough, two men who accepted their fates with grace and humility. A loser who said his opponent deserved to win, and a winner who said his opponent was the best player of his time.
Over 4 hours of running, lunging, serving and volleying. Tide turning action. No fifth set tie break or sudden death. Two gunslingers firing until one dropped.
With all the hype on the ‘net, for my money, this was far greater than Tiger’s Open win, because no one knew who would win, and neither guy thought he would lose (sorry, Rocco). Rain delays, comebacks, amazing shots and a satisfying conclusion. Fans who appreciated both men.
THE event of 2008. Who thought it would be tennis?
