It’s Time For the Indians To Address Their Problems.
It seems inconceivable that the whole team is slumping at the same time offensively. One thing IS certain. Last year’s bullpen stats were a fluke, and there is no way Perez and Betancourt can live up to last years standards.
Eddie Murray was terminated after a more mild hitting slump. Derek Shelton’s name is not even mentioned. There appears to be no accountability as to why Indians hitters are refusing to take walks and continue to swing at anything remotely near the plate.
In fact, listening to Wedge/Shapiro, Hafner needs to work harder, Raffy needs to get the ball down, Casey needs to just be himself, and Francisco needs to be on ice in Buffalo. As the season descends into a potential nightmare of no hitting and lousy relief, someone needs to point a new direction.
But, as usual, our manager sticks to his guns. No need to change. Everything is just about concentration and details.
I, for one, do not agree. Everyone is pressing, and no one has patience. Shapiro’s “big ball” home run theory has been aborted by the steroid scandal. No one appears to want to take 4 pitches to help the team. Everyone wants to hit the big ball.
Baseball is still a game. Unfortunately, the prevailing attitude is not “fun” in Cleveland. It’s all “work ethic”, “diligence” “focus” and “repetition”. Until the players loosen up, we will continue to score 2 runs a game and relievers will give up big runs.

Posted on May 5th, 2008 at 10:32 amThey’re going to call Ben Francisco up in a day or two. But their problems are much deeper than one OF can solve. Check out my column at http://maxwellsports.blogspot.com/ for more on this.

Posted on May 5th, 2008 at 2:16 pmI have a statement for you that teams need to live by. Any team that has two people playing the same position really has none.
